10 Tips on How to Build a Strong Relationship With God

How can we live a life full of the Holy Spirit in close connection with God? Often as Christians, we don’t fully live the relationship between us and our Heavenly Father.

Here are 10 Tips that will help us to live an intimate life with our Beloved and teach us how to build a strong relationship with God.

Tip # 1 – Pray

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-PrayerJesus’s disciples saw Him living a life full of power, and they realized that His life and lifestyle were based on prayer. For this reason, they asked Him: “Teach us how to pray.” We can find whole books just on this topic, but the first step that we learn from Jesus’s teaching is how to approach God.

In the Lord’s prayer, Jesus refers to God as “our Father”. This is the first sentence and it shows us how we need to approach God in our times of prayer. If we want to build a strong relationship with God, we need to spend time with Him. Like any other relationship, we must be relational and prayer is the first way to approach God.

We can go to Him knowing He is our father and that He will listen to us no matter what situation we find ourselves in, whatever sin we have committed, whatever is our need, God is there for us. He is The Good Father. Knowing that God is our Father is the first step to building a strong relationship with Him.

Tip #2 – Read the Bible

Reading the Bible is vital in order to know God. God is the Living Word! In the Bible, we discover the character of God, the principles of His Kingdom,  the truth about us/our identity, about life and about anything regarding the relationship between God and His people.

We can read about the mistakes that humankind made in the past and that are repeated also today. The Holy Spirit reveals to us through the Bible how to build a strong relationship with God, but also all the other things that strongly affect our relationship with Him.

The Word of God is the bread of life!

Tip #3 – Worship

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-WorshipThere is so much meaning in this word and it’s impossible to fully describe it, but to describe it briefly in one sentence: Worship is responding in an appropriate way to the love and character of God, submitting ourselves to his deity.

Since I describe worship as a response to God, this underlines the fact that in order to respond to something or someone, we need to face the thing or encounter the person. I make this statement since Jesus spoke about a relationship and He brought worship to a deeper level if compared with the worship in the Old Testament.
In the Old Testament, we see worship as:

  • submission
  • giving honor
  • offering
  • bowing down
  • etc.

But in the New Testament, there is also a newer element to it which is related to kissing. This speaks of intimacy and of a close relationship.

Tip# 4 – Be real

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-FatherBeing real is the foundation of how to build a strong relationship with God. Relationships that are not real don’t last very long. God wants us to approach Him in a sincere way. This is why Jesus talks about worshipping God in spirit and in truth. As we just said, worship is closely connected with having a personal relationship with God.

Something important to know is that God hates fake praises and flattery as we can read in Mattew 15:7-9. I would suggest being transparent with God. After all, He knows everything.

Tip #5 Listen

How can we build a strong relationship with God if we are not able to hear what He is saying?
God speaks to us through the Holy Spirit in many ways.

  1. Through the Bible: this is the first way since everything that we hear from God has to be in line with His scripture.
  2. Images or pictures in our minds: God often uses an image to communicate something that we are able to understand through it.
  3. Words: words may come up in our minds which are related to scripture or to a specific meaning associated with the word
  4. Words of Knowledge: a revelation about something or a situation or any kind of knowledge required at a particular moment. God will give it to us to help us find wisdom. (We can see this in 1 Corinthians where the gifts of the Holy Spirit are mentioned.)
  5. Dreams: God often speaks to us through dreams which require interpretation. Usually, if God speaks to us through a dream, the dream will stick with us and we will remember it clearly.
  6. Other people: God can use anybody to communicate with us.
  7. Situations: God may use specific situations (even obstacles) to give us guidance and direct us.

We could go on and on since God can speak to us in infinite ways. The importance is to be open knowing He always desires to communicate with us.

Tip #6 Walk in obedience

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-DirectionWalking in obedience means not only following the commandments which we find in the Bible but also knowing what God wants from us in a specific way. Walking in disobedience will not allow us to live fully our destiny and calling. Let us keep in mind that this is a journey with God, and every day we need to understand what are the things that God requires of us.

These things could be as simple as loving someone that is close to us. Walking in obedience requires faith and faith without works is dead. I suggest that any time we spend time with God we should ask Him if there are specific things we need to do or be aware of for that day. We also need to understand where we are going in the long term. We need to have a revelation of our calling in life, and, day by day, God will show us how to get there.

Tip #7 Have faith and believe

Without faith, it’s impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).

How can we relate to someone that we can’t see without having faith? How can we obey and even take risks if we don’t have faith?

Faith is at the base of our relationship with God. Without it, we can’t approach Him. Having faith does not only mean to acknowledge His existence but also to believe in and live according to His ways.

Tip #8 Set some time apart for Him

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-LoveIf we want to learn how to build a strong relationship with God we need to invest in it and dedicate specific time to Him.

God is Spirit and we need to realize that relating with Him is not like relating to our buddies. If we want our relationship to be strong, not only do we need to dedicate time to our regular prayer, but we need to create specific moments, periods, or times where we just focus on Him, separating ourselves from our normal routine.

These specific times can also be accompanied by fasting. Fasting is renouncing to our flesh in order to give space to God’s Spirit in us. This kind of lifestyle is the life that Jesus showed to his disciples in order for them to live a life of power and love.

Tip #9 Include God in our daily life

We are the temple of God, and God lives in us. Sometimes we forget that He is always with us and we live as if He is distant. Living with this awareness will help us to include him in our daily activities and will make us realize that He is with us all the time.

Everything we do, we do with Him, and we learn how to include Him in our life.

God cares also about all the small things that we do in life. Experiencing Him in our daily life will make us feel loved by Him. Our love for Him and His presence will grow and ultimately make us desire Him more.

In Italy, we say that the appetite comes by eating 😉

Tip #10 Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit

Learn-how-to-build-a-strong-relationship-with-God-Love-isGreaving the Holy Spirit means allowing things in our life that are against the nature of God. Since God lives in us, when we sin we are dirtying His house and we hinder our relationship with Him.

For this reason, when it happens that we sin, we must restore our relationship with God by confessing our sins and admitting our faults. In this way, by the blood of Jesus, we realign our lives with the ways of God, and the Holy Spirit can move in and through us.

How to Build a Strong Relationship with God – Final Thoughts

These tips or guidelines are just part of living a life close to God. Learning how to build a strong relationship with God has to come from a desire to know Him more. Living this kind of life is costly. It’s the life of someone who is in love and is ready to give everything to God.

I believe these are the worshippers God is looking for, men and women who are after His heart and know in their hearts that God is worthy of this price. This is the example that Jesus gave us.

  1. I thank you for this important guide to building a strong relationship with God, and I do have a strong relationship with God by doing all you recommend every day.

Even though God is always on my mind and in my heart all through my day, I am not the religious person and I am curious what you think if someone loves God with all their heart and soul but does not attend religious sermons?

    1. Hi Jeff, thank you for your question and for being open.
I believe is important to have a community, as Paul says in Hebrews 10:25 to don’t forsake the assembly.
Sometimes is hard to find a community that fits us, there are many things involved in the choice of a church. I look at the vision the community has, at the style of leadership, and so on. But still, we need to be part of a church, also being aware that we will find also some people that we may not like, and keeping in mind probably not everybody will like us.
I like churches with a sense of community since we are a family.
I really encourage everyone to have a community since is part of our Christian journey.
I’m sure that if we ask God to lead us in the right community, He will do it. Keeping in mind there is no perfect church.
I hope I answered your question.
      I wish you the best.
      God bless you so much

  2. Hey Andy,

Thank you for this instructive and informative piece.

Your first point – to pray – is particularly pertinent and what you said is spot on. It is the cornerstone of building a relationship with God. Even Jesus himself prayed. And Apostle Paul tells us to be imitators of Christ.

I have never heard the saying, “…the appetite comes by eating”. I love it.

In the end, we have to pray and put these tips into practice to get close to God.

    Thank you

  3. What a lovely post – really enjoyed reading. It is just my cup of tea. I totally agree with you. It amazing we have a true and close relationship Him – our lives is no longer ours even though we still living in this world we become spiritual being having human experience-kind of Jesus was when he was here. God bless

  4. I enjoyed reading your post. Prior to the new year, I decided to delve deeper into my faith and understanding of our Creator. He’s put the call for the lost on my heart like never before this year. As our culture grows more distant from God, man’s depravity is openly celebrated. So, as followers of Christ Jesus, our first mandate is to behave as the ambassador of the King which includes getting out of the church buildings and onto the streets with the Good News to anyone who is willing to listen. The struggle most of us face is the fear of man is greater than the fear of a Holy God.

    1. Thank you Anne for your love and commitment. May God bless you and guide you in your journey with Him, and that this year would be a new year full of love and revelation. God bless you so much.

  5. Hi Andy, just read your post. It’s very inspiring and a good reminder of the basic disciplines of faith. I am currently looking to do some sort of (possibly online?) course to help me grow in my relationship with God. Was wondering if you have any recommendations?
